When humans of either sex reach approximately 20 years of age,
their heads have around 100,000 strands of hair and the average
rate of growth is a mere one-half of an inch per month. After
that, the number of hairs begin to decline. This hair loss continues
for life at a rate which depends on sex and hereditary traits.
Hoever, people lose about 12,000 hairs every six months ( about
65 - 100m hairs/day) as part of the natural growth cycle. Suddenly
noticing how many hairs are on the brush or on the edge of the
sink is pften the time when a person panics, but since the usual
hair loss of humans is almost 100 hairs a day this is really
not unusual. If there is no hair loss, this is cause for concern
also, because that means that the roots are not producing new
hairs. In order for new hairs to emerge, they must be nourished
at the base through the bloodstream and the scalp must be clean
and free of excess oil and debris: there must be a normal circulation
of the hormones that affect the function of the follicle.
